This Year's Award Winners

Nels Anderson Distinguished Service Award Recipient

Tom PickensCongratulations to Tom Pickens, this year’s recipient of the Nels Anderson Distinguished Service Award! Tom joined KCYC in 2002 and has been an active member of the boating community joining most cruises and taking off by himself on occasion. He is known for his passage planning that he commits to paper and will share with anyone interested. There is also a rumor that he would have been a real competitor for the sandbar award when he fell in up in Northern Canada but swore his companions to secrecy so the word never got out.

In addition to his participation with the fleet, he has also been an integral part of the leadership team for almost as long as he has been a member. He has held every Board position and served as our Commodore in 2008-09. One of the most telling things about his commitment to the club is that he didn’t rest on his laurels as a Past Commodore. Since becoming a Past Commodore, he has served as served as Fleet Captain, Secretary for several years and Treasurer for multiple years. He has also been the webmaster for years. He is currently finishing a 3 year stint on the Long Range Planning Committee.

He brings a thoughtful perspective to discussions, and wisdom and experience to decision making. He received this award back in 2010 just after he was Commodore, but his service to the club continued. For his years of commitment to the club in so many ways, Tom Pickens was awarded the Nels Anderson Distinguished Service Award.

KCYC Cruising Family of the Year

vier

  • Who went to 10 of the 13 events on the 2019 Cruising calendar?
  • Who was creative in their approach to attending and participating? (RV, by boat, local launch facilities, hotel, Air BNB, houseboat!)
  • Who stepped up to be Cruise Captains and attended in their 25 foot power boat?
  • Who is always willing to pitch in and assist other Cruise Captains?
  • Who frequently invited or involved their family?
You know them as Walter & Karen—the Vierecks!

The Sandbar Award

jerrySome may call foul play on the award for this year…or wonder why him?! So here is the logic…though maybe a bit twisted!

We had a fairly calm and safe cruising season this year, causing me to go back and take a hard look at the definition of this award as I pondered who might be most worthy.
This is a time honored award, beginning in 1976, given to an individual displaying outstanding seamanship, skill, cunning and diligence in outwitting the elements and surviving both at sea and ashore. And, who in the expending of such outstanding efforts, distinguishes himself or herself by committing the most fabulous, or simply the most, faux pas for the yachting year.

While we did have a circumstance or two that might have cause to welcome this award, I decided to give this to someone we all love and respect, who was a runner up two years ago, and a winner last year. This year went he beyond the call of duty and took on an incredible challenge to oversee our most exciting cruise, overseeing 20 boats and numerous club members attending by ferry.

While we can’t directly attribute all that happened to him individually, we did have an unprecedented series of incidents on the cruise. I wanted to take this opportunity to record those for history and to point out the outstanding leadership and calm demonstrated by this individual. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.

Cruise incident summary:
1. Multiple dinghies run aground
2. Multiple dinghies run out of gas – including one of them in the seaplane take off lane
3. A boat hit a rock
4. An injury with stitches in the emergency room medical care
5. A fall in the customs office
6. Someone go overboard HEAD FIRST in the marina harbor
7. A dog overboard
8. And unpredicted washing machine seas tossing and turning everyone unexpectedly

So Jerry….this one is for you! (and, ok, I owe you one)—Lovingly, Sandi Dalgleish, Fleet Captain
