COMMODORE'S CORNER

Commodore 2023-24 Rita Osborn

It is that time again! Another month has flown by and here we are waiting for Spring to arrive. Lucky me, I have been waiting in Guayabitos, Mexico, but soon to fly home, and I can’t wait to see the new floor that was installed while I was gone. It looks FAB from the pictures, and I owe a huge thank you to Chuck Turner for moving the schedule forward and installing in between events. Thank you to Ken Dalgleish for leading the installation team. So grateful for volunteers who make all these improvements come off the paper into reality. For those of you that wonder why we are improving a space we rent, it is because we “own” that interior space. It represents our image in the community, as well as other visiting yacht clubs. It is our home, and we have pride of ownership. There is no telling how long we will be in this space, but while we are, we will try to make it our own, by replacing worn or dated features per our Facilities Design Plan and as approved by the membership.

The calendar is full for March and there are all kinds of events to participate in—"Celebrate the Irish a Little Early," Boater Education Day, The Bremerton Cruise, Vino Adventures, Paella, and Ballard Locks Training. Be sure and check the calendar and register for these events. There really is something for everyone. And before I forget, I want to thank all the members who volunteer to plan, host, work at, and clean up after these events. Without your help we would be unable to provide such a full calendar.

April is also full of great events with more Boater Education and of course, the Daffodil cruise. And in keeping with tradition the Ladies Luncheon, hosted by non other than my husband, Rick Eveleth, will take place April 7.

Be sure to register for the Ladies Luncheon. “Island Style” is the theme this year, and you won’t want to miss the Island Style food, music, dance, attire, and for sure, Rick will “Talk Story” about his island home, Hawaii Island, often called the “Big Island”. There will be some surprises, and much warm Aloha that day, so E’ Komi Mai, a Hawaiian greeting meaning welcome, and imparting the sense of bringing people together. I will see you ladies there, and hopefully men volunteers that Rick will definitely need. Be kind to each other and Aloha Hui Hou.

A couple of notable Friday night events happened in February. On the 16th, we were ‘boarded’ by Edmonds Yacht Club as they held their famous lasagne contest. They made it super-easy for the bar as their commodore paid for all of the member’s wine and beer, so it was one transaction. Edmonds also tipped Darcy generously. Then on 2/23, there was a good turn out for the Adult Grilled Cheese dinner. The bar did very well on both occasions.

Jumping ahead to March 2, the spaghetti dinner at the Brownsville cruise was at capacity. Thanks to Ed and host Andy Wilson for allowing the bar staff (John and me) a short break to eat, and sit down for a few minutes. Also a special thanks to Ed for helping us unload the bar liquor, wine, beer, mixers, etc when we got to Brownsville in the afternoon in the cold rain, and then loading up what remained at the end of the evening (also in the cold rain). John and I really appreciated it. We took everything back to the club that night to get it secured before the floor replacement team arrived on Sunday morning.

Our treasure of a treasurer reports that February beat plan by more than 35% in revenue, but alas expenses beat the plan by a little more. So our net was up just 16% over plan. The hot event was the Polar Bear dinner, along with three additional moneymakers: the raffle, the auction, and half-and-half. But dues were 30% above plan and our net income for two months is more than we were expecting in six. Maybe we'll be able to pay for a new floor after all, and swallow a $5,000 insurance bill coming this month.

FLEET REPORT

Brownsville Cruise & Spaghetti Dinner
What a great start to March we had! The March cruise to Brownsville was cold and wet but the Fleet Spaghetti dinner was warm and delicious! We had 7 boats brave the winds, cold, rain, sleet and snow to make it to the Brownsville Marina. We even had 3 RVs make it to the small RV park at the marina! Our Cruise Captains Bob Mehm, Doreen Jordan, Brian Moyer and Holly Lawrence made the cruise about as warm and cozy as you could hope for. The weather broke enough for an awesome bonfire the first night with Hobo meals and even Hobo S'mores cooked up by Joseph Charnes! If you weren’t on the cruise, you missed out on an awesome breakfast casserole Holly Lawrence made Sunday morning with the leftovers from the Hobo meals. Who new Hobos could eat so well!  We also organized a trip to the Undersea Museum in Keyport for about a dozen of us.

But the hi-light of the cruise was surely the spaghetti dinner arranged by Andrew Wilson and Nancy Hanson. For $5 we enjoyed a simple but delicious spaghetti dinner at the Brownsville Yacht Club. John and Shelley Gantz brought the bar and happy spirits which set the mood for the whole evening. With Diane Nunez and Jane and Stan Mack helping as carpool drivers we got 44 members to the dinner. A number of members would not have been able to make it without their help. So a big thanks to Diane and the Macks.

Our immediate next event is the Boaters Education Class Saturday, March 9th with a myriad of subjects being covered including Weather, Navigation, VHF Comms and awareness, Harbor operations and even care and preservation of your boat canvas! There is still spaces available so sign up soon! We also have a Boater Education event Saturday, March 30 which will be a familiarization ride through the Hiram M. Chittenden Locks in Ballard.

Next cruise on the horizon is the Bremerton Cruise March 22-24 hosted by your Cruise Captain Joseph Charnes, followed shortly after by the Tacoma Daffodil Festival April 12-14 hosted by Cruise Captains Walter and Karen Viereck. Karen may still be taking T-shirts orders for the event so check with her soon if you want one. In May, we have a trifecta of events which consists of the Seattle Yacht Club Opening Day festivities, the Kingston Cove Opening Day activities, and the Memorial Day long cruise to Alderbrook Resort on Hood Canal. A number of cruisers will be making this an extended trip with stops in Port Ludlow and Pleasant Harbor possible. Look for details from your Cruise Captains Kim and Steve Page soon. Walter Viereck is coordinating RV participants wishing to join and stay at Potlatch State Park.

So as you can see, we are well on our way to an exciting and eventful boating season.

Boater Education & Safety
On February 27th, North Kitsap Fire and Rescue with the help of Michele Laboda, conducted a two hour fire awareness and fire extinguisher training event at their Kingston headquarters on Miller Bay Road. Nine KCYC members were in attendance and each of them had the opportunity to use a fire extinguisher to extinguish a gasoline fire.  We now have a resident AED in a case at the clubhouse that is mounted on the wall in the corner near the fleet photos. There is a CPR mask and nitrile gloves in the case. Over the last six months we have had twenty-one KCYC members complete a First Aid/AED/CPR course.

The next course will be scheduled for the September time frame. March 9th marks the annual KCYC Boater Education Day. There is a full agenda with a lot of topics that will benefit both members with boats and members who want to crew on boats. Check out the Events Schedule and register before it is too late!!

A boater education event is in the works for March 30th to take a limited number of KCYC members through the Hiram M. Chittenden locks. The event is on the calendar so be sure to sign up.  On April 6th, there is a Boat America Course being delivered at KCYC by the Coast Guard Auxiliary with more information coming shortly. Remember that safe boating is everyone’s responsibility when on the water!!

If you have ideas for additional boater education topics and/or events please contact Jim DiIanni.

Second Annual Spring Boater Education Day 1Saturday, March 9th—Boater Education Day
Join us for a day-long series of presentations by KCYC members and industry professionals to help you prepare for the 2024 cruising season and beyond. We encourage attendance by boat captains/owners and crew members who want to participate in our club's boating activities. Each session will provide ample opportunity for Q&A.

This event is free for KCYC members and $10 for non-members. A continental breakfast and lunch will be provided.  Registration is required. The event is limited to 25 participants. There are still a couple of spaces available.

PORT  WATCH

port-of-kingston.png

Welcome to the Port Watch. For the third addition of this article, we’ll look at a typical Port meeting. At the meeting on February 28th, they:

  • reviewed and approve minutes from the previous meeting;
  • held a closed “Executive” session to meet with the Ports attorney via zoom;
  • opened the floor for the public to comment on Port business, issues, and concerns, with a three minute time limit;
  • approved standing contracts for consultant services. (Interestingly enough, they didn’t get into what those services were for;)
  • gave a brief report from the Greg Englin, Executive Director, on what was going on at the Port;
  • shared ideas on how to recognize Ray Carpenter’s contribution and dedication to the Port; and
  • held a second open floor for the public to comment, as it was apparent that many were not satisfied with the three minute time to get their views heard. (One commissioner tried to object unless those speaking agreed not to complain about stuff. That didn’t go far).

Sound boring? Well it can be, but it is clear that the dozen or so members of the public that have been going to the meetings are having an impact. Greg Englin was seen a few days later actually looking at the Hill House, and the condition of the restroom door near the boat ramp, two items brought up by the attendees. Where do we go from here? Next month's Port Watch is going to pull the cover back on some systematic failures in management by the Port. Just like the Wizard of Oz, we’re about to pull the curtain back. Stay tuned.

Any questions or comments, contact Jack Lott, jlott@shuttlesmart.net.

Sharenet Food Drive

We learned from Sharenet that the time of year when food need is greatest tends to be in the summer. Why? It's the furtherest away from Thanksgiving and that's when people who give food are thinking about that. So this year, we'll shift our fooddrive to the beginning of the summer. Keep an eye out--details to follow.

Some of you may have wondered why we do this. 1.) We can; 2.) We should; 3.) Our community needs it; and 4.) Our community notices and appreciates it.

Dear Club Members,
It is with a much sadness that I let you know about the passing of member Mark Wiser.  I loved Mark and Dawn the moment I met them at a Friday night social, and felt as though I had known Mark my whole life.  He was funny, and kind and his smile welcoming. Unfortunately, his illness caught up with him, and he left us suddenly. A blessing that his suffering is over, but a profound loss, below is some information about Mark from his wife Dawn, who misses him, and would like you too know a little more about him.

Mark was born and raised in California.He and Dawn moved to Wenatchee Washington in 1978 for small town living. When their kids moved out of town, they decided to move closer to grandchildren and choose Kingston. Mark loved KCYC from the minute we walked into the club. What a great social opportunity for people in a small town. Mark graduated from CSU, Sacramento. He spent his career in energy conservation. He loved skiing, travel and being with family and friends. That smile will be remembered always.

Marks Celebration of Life is on May 4th at KCYC. Rest in peace Mark.
