COMMODORE'S CORNER

Commodore 2023-24 Rita Osborn

As we embark on 2024, things are looking bright for KCYC, but we have our challenges as well. Our membership has grown so fast, and by so many that we are bursting at the seams. This is a challenge that the Board is working on, and there is no easy solution. We are limited to 80 occupants and at that capacity, the place is uncomfortably crowded. The positive side of this is KCYC has become a prominent and valued entity in the Kingston Community, because we are present and visible helping, participating and volunteering. Thank you all for your volunteer hours outside the club, it hasn’t gone unnoticed.

We have many great events planned for 2024, and the cruise calendar is packed with exciting cruise destinations. The first cruise is to Edmonds, and get ready for an incredible prime rib dinner. In addition to the many cruises, back on our list is the Victoria Cruise. If you haven’t been in years past, put it on your list. If you can’t take your boat stay in a airbnb or hotel, and join the fleet for a great time in my favorite town in Canada.

Friday nights are well attended, and the social committee is planning many fun-filled events. In addition, we have education programs, and other activities planed to give members a varied choice of activities.

So as you start the new year give yourselves a little pat on the back for all you accomplished last year, and what you have to look forward to this year. Be kind to each other, be healthy and give a few hours to volunteer each month. You will feel better for it! Aloha hui hou.

TREASURER REPORT

Progress on Clubhouse Improvements

Completed

  • Deck furniture stored for the winter.
  • Deck planters removed and stored for next spring.
  • New keyless smart lock installed on front door.
  • Kitchen grill extinguisher serviced.
  • Exterior blue holiday lights are up thanks to Rick, Steve & Jerry.
  • Kitchen towel cabinet latch replaced.
  • Kitchen grill exhaust system cleaned.
  • Repair of attic stairs hinge.

Next Up

  • Annual Facilities Design Meeting (1/11/2024)
  • Complete interior painting (1/20&21/2024)
  • Replace remaining pendant lighting with LED ceiling fixtures (Date TBD)

On the List

  • Install new flooring.
  • Replace window blinds.
  • Build out a soffit above the food counter replacing the current curtain.

Important Dates

  • Saturday & Sunday, January 20th & 21st – Interior Paining
We will be prepping and painting the interior walls over this weekend. Please volunteer on our website by accessing this event from the Event Calendar. Select Saturday and/or Sunday and morning and/or afternoon. Also indicate if can bring roller handle, trim paint brush, and/or putty knife. Let’s get it done together!

Notice something that could use fixing or improved?

The Bar Boosters loyalty program seems to be popular, and new blank cards are being ordered already! We will need to tweak the details to get over a few bumps in the road - the program will only be in effect on Friday nights. We have found that it’s a bit too overwhelming to track on busy Saturday night events (and New Year’s Eve).

If anyone has interest in helping out behind the bar, and doesn’t have a MAST (Mandatory Alcohol Server Training) license, there are many courses that can be completed on line in order to comply. You will be reimbursed for the cost of the course (varies from approximately $10 - $20). It’s a fun way to get your volunteer hours and put faces to names. And Darcy is a patient mentor.

We’re introducing a delectable Compton Family Oregon Pinot Noir for $8 per generous (Darcy) pour. Tasting notes from the winery website: 'Enticing aromas of red cherry, red berry, & forest floor. Elegant mouthfeel with waves of dark red fruit accents and hints of cacao’. If you’re a fan of Pinot Noir, be sure to try a glass and give me feedback.

Good news and news from the Treasurer

The good news is that we closed out 2023 quite a bit above plan, as we'll review at the general meeting. We have money, we are in the black, we have higher dues rolling in. We've even donated thousands to various charities. The bad news is that at the general meeting we will actually have to look at NUMBERS and approve a budget for 2024. One worksheet in the budget has 1,190 numbers in it, and there are 12 worksheets. That's a lotta numbers. Bring eyeshades.

FLEET REPORT

edmonds 3 2022

Well Christmas has come and gone but the KCYC excitement still lingers! The February Prime Rib Fleet Fundraising Dinner in Edmonds has sold out but if you haven’t signed up don’t let that dampen your spirits. We have a Wait list option and expect some on the wait list to be called up as we adjust our final numbers based on the capacity of the Edmonds Yacht Club. Neil and Karen Parker are putting together an awesome menu and Simona Dedek is setting up a sure to be exciting Silent Auction for the event. Jim Diianni will be your Cruise Captain so be sure to bring lots of singles to tip him when he brings out his guitar and harmonica!

The Brownsville Cruise is on the horizon but as I predicted, folks are curiously lining up for that cruise. We even have RVers signed up. So, it’s not too early to look at the first weekend in March to see if you can make a trip to Brownsville. Even if you don’t bring your boat or RV, catch a ride on one via the Ride Request form in the Club Documents section of the website under the Brownsville Cruise folder, or just drive down for the event. Expect a signup event announcement for the Brownsville Spaghetti Dinner to come out later this month.

All the cruises for the year are ready for registration with the exceptions of the Kingston and Seattle YC opening day events. Expect those to open for registration this month.  We will need volunteers to help with the Prime Rib Dinner so look for a Volunteer Request to come out this week. We also need a Cruise Captain for Brownsville. Andrew Wilson will be putting together the spaghetti dinner but we desperately need a Cruise Captain to coordination the rest of the activities. As you all know, the Cruise Captain is key to making these cruises entertaining and fun!  See you at the next General Meeting!

Second Annual Spring Boater Education Day 1Saturday, March 6th—Boater Education Day
The day is still being planned and it will be filled with interesting topics to help prepare captains and crew members for the 2024 cruising season. Stayed tuned for more information. If anyone hears of additional boater education opportunities that you think are of interest to our members, please forward the information to Jim DiIanni (jdiianni@msn.com).

PORT  WATCH

port-of-kingston.png

Welcome to the Port Watch, a new feature we hope you will read, enjoy, and participate in. Monthly, we’ll try to bring interesting and beneficial information to our members, whether you are a boat owner or not.  I invite all of our members to participate in this feature, passing along your thoughts, comments, and questions which I will work to address each month. Just send your messages to jlott@shuttlesmart.net by the 1st of each month.

For this inaugural article, let's start with information regarding scheduled Port meetings. For those that don’t know, the Port has weekly work sessions on Tuesdays open to the public to watch the internal workings of our Commissioners and the Executive Director. Normally these sessions don’t take public comment on issues, but recently many KCYC members have been allowed to express their views on important topics.

What have KCYC members been able to accomplish... Many of us have raised issues regarding Port finances with the 2024 Port budget in its final iteration. Everyone's participation has helped shape the decisions by the Port, leading to a substantial concession by the Port on 2024 moorage rate increases. 2024 will see the smallest rate increase in recent years, with a special call out to Ken Dalgleish for carrying our collective message on keeping rates low. We all owe KCYC members who have stepped up and attended these meetings. Everyone's voice is important.

Before ending, I want to express our heartfelt concern for Ray Carpenter and wish him a speedy recovery from KCYC.  We all appreciate everything he has done for us, both as a club and as individuals.

Check out next month's Port Watch for more news.

About the KCYC Fundraiser during the Annual Polar Bear Dinner

Fundraising activities will take place during the annual Polar Bear Dinner. If you don't plan to attend, you can still participate in the Silent Auction (see bullet #2). The money raised will go to fund Fleet Cruise activities and the General Fund  This year, we will have three different things going on:

  1. 50/50 Raffle that everyone loves and expects! Tickets sold go into one pot, and a single winner is declared! The proceeds are split between the winner and the Club.
  2. Silent Auction. We have a number of AMAZING prizes, and the list keeps growing. Check out kcyc.org/PolarBear for a preview. Even if you’re not at the dinner, you too can bid! See the page for more information. All the bids will with start at a $5 minimum, and go up in $5 increments.
  3. Raffle. Individual items of a lesser value than Silent Auction pieces will be raffled off, individually this time. You will purchase raffle tickets as usual, but will place them into individual containers by each item.

Please let me know if you have any questions! Text, email or call me.

MEMBERSHIP ENGAGEMENT COMMITTEE

Happy 2024! New Year’s Eve was a great way to start off the year. KCYC has much to celebrate with membership reaching 176 members. The role of the Membership Engagement Committee is to increase the visibility of new members and facilitate the integration of new members into the Club. Commttee members serve as Greeters to provide information and support to new members who attend KCYC events.  The Membership Committee assigns new member sponsors or follows up with new members to provide support and answer questions.  Board Members and member Sponsors act as resources to provide information and support.

Current members are instrumental in referring and welcoming visitors interested in learning about KCYC. Many new members decide to join KCYC after learning what we have to offer. One comment we hear from new members is how welcoming and friendly the atmosphere is at the club.  All members can help continue this by doing things like:

  • Introducing visitors to others around them.
  • Asking new members to sit with you at a General Meeting.
  • Inviting a new member to volunteer with you for an event.

Thanks to all the members for making KCYC the Friendliest Yacht Club in the Salish Sea. Cheers! Diane Nuñez, Chair

MEET THE MEMBERS

rick_e.jpg
Each month we are going to highlight one of the club's members. You might be surprised by what you learn about them!

An Interview with Rick Eveleth, The First Husband

  1. So, how is it being the “first husband” now that Rita is the Commodore?
Actually it is easier this year than last because there are less physical duties for Rita (and therefore me). I am a little concerned about the ladies tea which is my responsibility.
  2. We know you ran a large agricultural operation in Hawaii. What crop(s) did you manage, and which ones were your favorite.  Sugar cane and coffee. Sugar cane was my favorite and I managed 13,000 acres of it.
  3. What drew you to Kingston from the “warm” climate of Hawaii? Rita made me do it! Her grandkids were in Kingston and so we decided to spend retirement here. I love the PNW except for degree’s below 30.
  4. Your name has come up for the Sand Bar award for two events—falling off your boat, and pulling into a moorage with your anchor down. Which one do you think qualifies you for that award?  I won the sandbar award for coming into moorage with my anchor down. Both are worthy of the sandbar award. Lol.

MEET THE APPLICANTS

Sonya & David Bennett—reposted from 1/4/24 special edition Bosun Pipe

Let’s give a hearty welcome to Sonya & David Bennett! They happen to be Cecile’s daughter and son-in-law.  This couple moved to Kingston in 1982 and have lived in the area since then. Sonya is a massage therapist on Bainbridge Island, and David is a business consultant.

These active folks enjoy paddleboarding, kayaking, backpacking, biking, mountain biking, fishing, cooking, and home brewing. They are also involved with the Boy Scouts of America.   Although they do not currently own a boat, they do have some sailing experience and often go out with friends and family on their boats.  Sonya and David are eager to plan some Friday night socials and parties, help in setting up or cleaning up before and after meetings, and publishing the monthly newsletter.

And Now a "little" Sunshine:

We have an update on Ray Carpenter, our Port manager. He continues to make improvements in his recovery from surgery for a brain tumor. He is in St. Michael's Hospital in Silverdale and has begun physical therapy to learn to speak and walk again. He is also undergoing radiation and chemotherapy. He is making progress, but it is slow and difficult.  He is able to have visitors but if you are planning to visit, please email Sandy Powell at cspowell@cbnn.net to coordinate the timing of your visit.

A GoFundMe page has been set up to help with Ray's medical expenses. To date, there have been 343 donations for a total of $62,920.  Anything you can contribute is much appreciated. Go to: https://gofund.me/5ae0ebc7.
