Tacoma Marine Daffodil Festival - April 24-26

We had 6 boats and 1 RV attend this event at the Tacoma Yacht Club (TYC) located at Point Defiance in Tacoma. This was our first time in many years that we participated in this action packed, long-time event. Our boats were moored in or alongside boat houses.  25 yacht clubs, 140 boats and 12 RVs attended. Our club was well represented:

  • Our Commodore, Art Hammon,  participating in a formal flag ceremony,
  • Jeopardy Trivia team led by Karen Viereck on Saturday,
  • Entry in the Sunday decorated boat parade taking 1st place in the wooden boat category,
  • Several boats from our fleet attending, and
  • Several non-boat members riding on member boats or driving by car.

May 5-7 Seattle Opening Day

This is a Seattle tradition with a long history put on by the University of Washington and Seattle Yacht Club.  A lot of Seattle and surrounding area residents come out to the Montlake Cut to watch the morning Windermere Cup crew races followed by the afternoon parade of decorated boats. KCYC also has a long-standing history of participating every year.

We have 13 boats intending to participate this year. Thank you Nancy Langwith for volunteering as Cruise Captain. KCYC is most fortunate to continue having moorage hosted by the Queen City Yacht Club (QCYC) on Portage Bay adjacent to the Seattle Yacht Club. QCYC will be open throughout this extended weekend for meals and nightly entertainment with live music.
Below are links to QCYC and SYC providing details on all the action for the weekend:

REAR COMMODORE REPORT

Report from your Rear Commodore

Hello from your Rear Commodore –

Very happy to be back with our boating friends after a few months in Arizona.  Karen and I are testing out this “Snowbird” concept and discovered we like it.  Many volunteers stepped up to support the bar operations in my absence. Thanks to all.

We are going to try out some extended hours this summer. The bar will stay open until 10:00 on Friday nights between Kingston Opening Day on May 13 and Labor Day.

The Social Committee is keeping me and our bar volunteers busy supporting the large number of upcoming events.   See the club calendar for details.  We love summer!

We did a bit of needed maintenance for some of the bar equipment this month, mainly for the soda gun.  We bought some new syrup box’s and had the gun rebuilt by Swire Coke.  They have been great to work with.

I have been working with the Port of Kingston to learn which yacht clubs are coming to Kingston and reaching out to invite them to our clubhouse on Friday nights.  It’s been fun.  On Friday, April 21 there were more people from Milltown Sailing at the Club then KCYC members.  It is good for bar business, but it would be nice to have a few more folks come out for meet and greet.  Again, review the website calendar for details.

Thank you all for your continued support of the KCYC bar.

Regards

Walter Viereck

April 2023 was a great month at the Club!

Sunday, April 2nd the Commodore’s spouse, Cheryl Hammon, hosted the annual traditional Ladies Luncheon.  The gentlemen of the club stepped up to prep, serve, and clean up.  The menu was amazing!  Perfectly cooked salmon and sides, and the bubbly did not stop flowing.  And we all enjoyed the tongue in cheek fashion show that was a great surprise to us all!

Friday, April 14th, we served Texas Chili dogs at the Club while we were supposed to “meet and mingle” with Mukilteo Yacht club in town for their cruise.  Sadly for them, they had to cancel their cruise at the last minute due to weather forecast, but we had a great time regardless! Thank you Julie Turner and Jan Erickson for taking this on
