COMMODORE'S CORNER

Kim Francisco-Clark, Commodore

We’ve had some crazy weather the past couple weeks, from high winds to torrential downpours, to hail, and then beautiful sunshine.  I have seen many sailboats out on the water with the wind, which is a beautiful sight to see. I am looking forward to the longer days and getting back on the water. From my family to yours, we wish you a Happy Easter and a wonderful April!  Hope to see you soon!

April Showers bring May Flowers!

March was a busy month at our club with wine tasting, special events, cruising, boater education, visiting yacht clubs, and Friday Night Social events with our members.  Thank you to Julie Westwater for the O’KCYC Pub, yummy food, and music for our St. Patrick’s Day celebration.  Thank you to Joseph Charnes, Cruise Captain, for our Port Orchard Cruise.  Thank you to our Cheers Committee for setting up a wine tasting on Bainbridge Island.  Thank you for Janiece Christian and Chuck Turner for coordinating our Spring Boater Education and Boat Inspections and all the presenters.  Thank you to Gloria Young and Kim Page for a stunning and spectacular start studded Academy Awards Party!  And last but certainly not least, thank you to you, our members for volunteering to help make these events so fun.  It’s because of you that we can do so many great events.  THANK YOU!

April brought crazy weather, but some great events.  Thank you to Diane Nunez for sponsoring our Pulled Pork Sandwich Friday Night Social while we hosted the Tollicraft Club.  Thank you to Walter Viereck for calling Bingo! B-I-N-G-O!  And thank you for the surprise birthday cupcakes and flowers for my birthday!  We certainly had a fun time.

We also celebrated the ladies of KCYC at our Annual Ladies Luncheon.  Traditionally, the spouse of the Commodore, hosts this event.  This year, Tony Clark, Past Commodore, turned KCYC into the “Dixie Diner” and we had a “hootenanny” while listening to blues and southern rock music.

We feasted on southern cooking, cocktails, and Tony shared with us history of the South and many stories from his childhood…not sure all of them were entirely true…but he sure made us ladies laugh quite a bit.  The men of KCYC were there and looking very nice and helped with the food, serving, and treating each of us like Southern Belle’s.
Shannon Castillo, Thistle Floral & Home, gave us a lovely presentation on putting together flower arrangements.  TIP:  Cut your flower stems at an angle and put in warm water for them to last longer.  The highlight of the day was that I got to present the Lona McFarland award to a KCYC member that goes above and beyond for our members and club.  Gloria Young has been a member for over 12 years and has helped in all aspects of our club the entire time.  She is always there to help when needed, she is the “hostess with the mostess”, has a smile for everyone, and her hugs are amazing.  Gloria, thank you for all that you do for our club, and we adore you!

Please note the club will be closed on Friday, 4/15.  Our General Meeting is Thursday, 4/21, and is open to all members.  Would love to see you there.  Calling all members to come and help us for our Spring Clubhouse Cleanup on Saturday, 4/23, 8:30A to noon.  Rumor has it there will be coffee and pastries.  We are offering a 2-part class for anyone needing to obtain their WA State Boater Education Card on Sunday, 4/23 and 5/1.  Classes are 9A -5P.  Please make sure to sign up to reserve your spot for this very important class.  Friday, 4/29, Loretta Jones, will be hosting with her Killer Mexican Casserole and Margaritas!  Ole!  Please make sure to sign up for these events soon!

Port Orchard Cruise

KCYC Fleet (and Non Boat Owners too)

Greetings from your Fleet Captain.    Boating season is starting to get busy so get your RSVP’s into the club web site early.

Port Orchard was our March 18th – 20 destination.  Joseph Charnes put together a great weekend with several activites around food, a dingy race that included shooting some basketball hoops and renting out part of a local brewery.   The Brownsville Yacht club joined us on Saturday night for some nautical trivia which was lots of fun. Thank you Joseph for putting this all together.

Everett was our early April destination.  Laurie Madison did a great job as Cruise Captain. We had 13 boats signed up and two couples staying at the Indigo hotel. We enjoyed cocktails on Friday night at the dock. Saturday featured a Cache Hunt, a potluck dinner with a grill, and a fabulous sunset.

Upcoming Cruises include:

Seattle Opening Day on Lake Washington.  Join us on Queen City Yacht Clubs dock for some fun.  This is a busy weekend with more activites than I can list.  For details check out Seattle Yacht Clubs website at:  Opening Day - Seattle Yacht Club

Roaring 20’s is the theme.   We are still looking for a boat owner willing to represent the club in the parade.  Please shoot me a note if you are willing.  There will be lots of help to decorate and even help captain if desired.

Right after Seattle Opening Day is Kingston Opening day May 13th – 15th.   Please sign up on the clubs web site if you want a slip in the marina.  Alan and Shelly Kester are Cruise Captains and are working on some fun activites. The Kingston Curiosity Tour is happening on that Saturday.  We are working on some activites to connect the two events.   We will be having the traditional christening of new and newly named boats, blessing of the fleet and a boat parade.

Memorial day at Bell Harbor is next and is always a fun event.  It’s like having a Seattle Waterfront Apartment for the weekend.  I am still in need of a Cruise Captain for this event to help plan activites.

Port Townsend is almost full.  All the RV sites are taken and we may be ablet to get one more boat in.  I am working with the marina to secure more slips and RV sites.  Please, Please – If you think you might be going register on the clubs website as we are about full.   Diane Nunez is Cruise Captain with John and Shelly Gantz as Co-Cruise Captain’s. Plans are being developed as I write this.

The club calendar is up to date on schedules.

Hopefully everyone saw my note about boaters who are willing to take non-boat owners to Everett.   This is a new feature we are offering as a result of your feedback on the survey.  If you are a boat owner and willing to take passengers, let me know or If you are a non-boat owner and want to boat on to a cruise destination at which you have alternate accommodations let me know

Clean up day is always better with friends

KCYC Annual Top to Bottom Cleanup Day
Saturday, April 23rd

Time to shake off the dust, beat the rugs, clean out the cabinets, and get ready for a great summer of boating, Friday nights, and gatherings with our friends!

We hope everyone will come out to help clean up the club.  We will be starting at 8:30am, and if we have the same great turnout as last cleanup day, we should be done by noon.  With current plans to have the deck and railing cleaned and painted in advance, we only need to tackle cleaning the windows and the inside tasks.

It's an important job that is always more fun with friends.  And don't be surprised if there are pastries and coffee for the volunteer help.

Mardi Gras at KCYC

Mardi Gras was hosted at the club by Ken and Sandi Dalgleish.

We certainly let the good times roll, serving up a yummy 3-course meal including Andouille sausage in pastry, spiced nuts, with a shrimp, sausage and chicken gumbo over rice, and wrapped up with a Mississippi Mud Slide Brownie and ice cream.

We certainly don’t go hungry at the club!

A big thank you to Beth Layton for lining up the Bainbridge wine walk.  There was a good group who showed up, including several guests.  Always fun to show others what a great time we have when we are together.  Nice job!

St. Patrick's Day  Event

Once again Julie Ann & William Westwater performed the feat of transforming our club into O’KCYC Irish Pub,

Julieann’s amazing handmade meat pies were coupled with all her special touches for the tables. We also enjoyed the traditional Irish live music.  And there was beer too.

This is always a special event and was again well attended this year.

Pulled Pork and Bingo with the Tollyclub

A huge thank you to Diane Nunez for hosting the Tollyclub for Pulled Pork Sandwiches and BINGO!  We had just under 50 folks in total and the Tollyclub had a great time.  This was the first time they have been able to come visit us for the past two years and they would like to make it an annual event.

Thank you!  As always, a huge thank you for all the volunteers who help make these events possible.

GENERAL INFORMATION

Kingston Cove Yacht Club is searching for volunteers

KCYC is in the midst of a 2022 Volunteer Drive and resetting the baseline to Jan 1 2022.  Once you complete your 12 hours of service, come see the Commodore and receive a star for your name tag and a coupon for a drink at the bar!

We have a Volunteer Service logbook at the front desk…feel free to log your time so we can be sure to recognize you properly.

For those of you who have completed your 12 hours of volunteer service this past year….Thank you!

Ideas for volunteering:

  • You will see opportunities under our facilities improvement plan that call for skills that we know many of you have….take a look over that and let us know how you would like to help
  • And we are always in need of hosts for Friday nights.  Volunteer to host a meal.  You will be reimbursed for all costs.  And there helper roles always needed …greeters, take photos, set up/serve, clean up afterwards….we guarantee you will have fun
  • There are fun ways to help your Fleet Captain - see the Fleet Report.

Get involved!  It really is more fun when we all pitch in and it is a great way to get to know your other members. Contact Sandi Dalgeish at dalgleish@comcast.net for more information or to get involved.

Vice Commodore Report

As announced at the last General Meeting, Steve Young and Ken Dalgleish are working together to fulfill the duties of the Vice Commodore for the remainder of this term.

The sound bar is now installed, completing the new surround sound system, and the club has a Pandora account so live streamed music is available to all club events and rentals.  Simple instructions are available at the front desk.

The door repair to the locking bar cabinets is underway.  The rotted railing along the south side of the deck has been replaced…and is not only studier but looks great!

A huge thank you to the Port and the crew that came out and helped make that repair possible.

Planning for spring cleanup is underway – please see the information below and be sure to come out and help!  Steps are in motion to address the patio furniture with new deck chairs on the way and plans to refurbish the existing tables to match.

The Board will be reviewing funding availability for the next round of upgrade projects, following the club design plan approved by the members.  Next in line will be upgrading the bathrooms and repainting the inside of the club.

NOTE to KCYC Members:  The patio chairs that have adorned our deck are being replaced and the old ones are available for free to anyone who would like them.  Please reach out to Sandi at dalgleish@comcast.net if you are interested.
