Seattle Boat Show LIVE EVENT
Thursday, July 30, 2020 7:00 PM - 8:15 PM
Techniques for Anchoring Your Boat for a good night's sleep

Many fear anchoring out for an overnight stay at many of the beautiful, quiet anchorages in the Pacific Northwest. Seattle Boat Show LIVE will cover this timely topic as summer cruising moves into the prime summer season. With a few practical tips, anchoring in your favorite cove can be easy and secure, for a goodnight's sleep on the hook.

The NMTA and the Waggoner Cruising crew will go through the steps for successful anchoring. We will also cover tips on the best anchoring gear, what scope you should use, where you should select the best spot to anchor and how to assure your anchor is set for safe anchoring for a pleasant afternoon lunch or an overnight stay in a beautiful bay or cove. In addition we have plenty of funny stories about how not to anchor! We can all learn from our mistakes and have a few laughs along the way.

This an interactive session. You can ask questions through our chat feature.
Most importantly, after this session you can anchor safely and confidently.

Details: - We will be using Zoom. - You can join our session by using a Mac, PC or a mobile device. This will be recorded if you miss it. And, you can now register in advance for upcoming dates.

Covid 19 Update
Since early March, KCYC has been compliant with Covid 19 regulations to ensure that we are providing an environment that is socially responsible for members that elect to participate. There are on-line resources that will make this information available to you. Educate yourself and be safe. Locally, the Kitsap Public Health maintains information that is available on-line at: https://kitsappublichealth.org/CommunityHealth/CoronaVirus.php

Volunteers
Throughout this tough time our volunteers continue to make a big difference for the club! Whether it is planning and re-planning events/cruises, making improvement to the facility, helping at events/cruises or participating in ongoing club maintenance a big thank you to all. If you would like to help out, just reach out to any Board member.

Events
The club will continue to focus on making events and cruises available to you. Our priorities are safety first and then figuring out what we can do while maintaining a consistent compliance focus.

Finance
Because of our restructuring of dues in the prior year, our finances are surviving to date. We have consumed our operating contingency, reduced expenses while experiencing lower revenue, and we project this to continue through September. The Board continues to monitor and adjust as required. Your continued membership is crucial as we move through this environment. Together we will continue to innovate and focus on what we can do to create value for the membership even in the challenges of this outbreak.

KCYC Nominating Committee – Call for Nominations

Are you interested in a Board Leadership Position?  The Commodore has selected the 2020 Nominating Committee members.  The responsibilities of this group are to advertise open positions on the Board, collect names or offer names of potential candidates, inform potential candidates of the role and expectations for each position, receive a commitment from each candidate, identify at least one candidate for each open position and present those names to the general membership for a final vote at the September General meeting.  The members of the committee are: Nancy Langwith, Steve Young, Kim Page, John Gantz, and Rick Wood.

As has been true in the past, the open positions include: Commodore, Vice Commodore, Rear Commodore, Fleet Captain, Treasurer, Secretary, and Trustee (2 year Term). The current 2 year Trustee, Rick Eveleth, will continue in his position and the current Commodore will become the Past Commodore. There is a tradition of flag officers “walking the chairs” meaning that flag officers move through the chairs from Fleet Captain to Commodore in order to maintain continuity and institutional knowledge. Although the tradition stands, it is not absolute and anyone interested must notify the Nominating Committee if they would like to be considered for any office.

Leadership is paramount to the success of the club and each member has the responsibility to help select that leadership and volunteer for a leadership position when ready. With this Call for Nominations, we are asking that each person consider whether this is the year that they will step for a Board Position or provide names of others that they think would be a good fit. Job descriptions and the Bylaws Requirements for officers may be found on the website in the Documents Folder. Please pass your own name or another to a member of the Nominating Committee for consideration. The Nominating Committee will contact each nominated person to offer information concerning the role and the expectations via discussions and job descriptions. If you have questions or would like more information, contact any member of the Nominating Committee or click here to send an email:

langwithn52@gmail.com

Remember it is OK to nominate yourself!

Club Activities Under the New Covid 19 Guidelines

Safe Summer Fun —Covid Update

We have enjoyed Friday nights at the club under the guidance from state, health and county agencies.  As early as March great care was taken to adjust the indoor and outdoor seating, traffic flow, mask requirements, distancing, and service to ensure we were providing a compliant and safe environment for our members.

As many of us are aware, the state’s requirements for operating our club have again evolved with some additional guidance from the agencies.  Just as we have complied to date, our club will comply with the additional guidance.  This includes the continued restriction for five people per table (must be members of the same household for inside seating), facial coverings when not seated, traffic flow compliance, signage, and sanitization protocols.

To ensure we have it right, we are going to CLOSE THE CLUB UNTIL AUGUST 7th.  Over the next 10 days, KCYC will provide you with actions, information, and expectations on how to be safe at the Club. We will be sending you a sequence of communications to ensure everyone understands the adjustments and your responsibilities.  We encourage everyone to watch for these emails and to ask questions.

When we reopen, we will feature a rotating Friday night food option available to be served at your table. Examples of this may include but are not limited to cheeseburgers, chili dogs, fish sandwich, chicken sandwich, tamales, lasagna, etc.  Of course, your input is welcome.

We look forward to seeing you at KCYC in August. We will continue to have all of the procedures, tools, and documentation in place to operate as a Phase 2 compliant social club we all desperately need right now.  With your support we will be a success.

July 31st Deadline to Donate to the Kingston Food Bank

Once again this year we are asking you to help the less fortunate in our community. The Kingston Food Bank has long been our adopted charity and they are in trouble. Their lease is up and the owner is not being cooperative. They are looking for a new location as they need to move out by December 31. Cash donations to help them through the transition to a new home and a new lease can be made through the website before July 31st.

Also, since we did not have a General Meeting to collect food supplies, please donate what you might have spent on food and Barb will do the shopping! We will deliver a check to the food bank on July 31st. We are all so blessed and Barb is always so appreciative of our efforts. Please click the link to donate. Every contribution counts as we total the KCYC contribution to the future of the Kingston Food Bank.

Thanks to all that have donated and to those that will.     Donate to the Kingston Food Bank

Update from the Social Committee

You may have noticed, there’s a thing called COVID-19 ganging aft our best laid schemes agley.*
But we have still schemes in plans in place, phase-dependent, of course. The August 8th Pig Roast is still on the calendar, as is the August 22 Cheeseburger party and the September 19 homecoming dance, at which the Silver City Six promises to play their hearts out. With luck, at least one of these events will take place and we can find some “promis'd joy!.*

Upcoming Cruise to Friday Harbor
September 4th—7th

Come away for a beautiful weekend at beautiful Friday Harbor, the gateway to the San Juan Islands.  You will be enchanted by this charming, historic, walk-able seaport just steps from the ferry landing with a multitude of small, friendly shops and restaurants.  In this visitor, family, and dog-friendly town, you’ll find a plethora of activities to keep you busy, from whale watching excursions, kayaking tours, The Whale Museum...and that is just in town.

There's no need for a car to see Friday Harbor. Everything is within walking distance of the ferry landing, and it is easy to get around, including shuttle buses and a trolley to take you around the island, as well as bike, three-wheeled Scootcoupes, and moped rentals.

Friday Harbor lodging accommodations offer a wide range of options including B&B, hotels and inns that let you open your doors to all that the town has to offer. You can get away from it all and still be just steps from charming cafes, galleries and shops, musical performances and plays, the Saturday farmers' market, and more.

American Quips of Humor—by Tom Davies

For those who love the philosophy of ambiguity, as well as the idiosyncrasies of English.

• Atheism is a non-prophet organization.
• If man evolved from monkeys and apes, why are there still monkeys and apes?
• What if there were no hypothetical questions?
• If a deaf child signs swear words, does his mother wash his hands with soap?
• If someone with multiple personalities threatens suicide, is it a hostage situation?
• If a parsley farmer is sued, do they garnish his wages?
• Would a fly without wings be called a walk?
• Why would gas stations lock bathrooms? Are they afraid someone might break in and clean them?
• If a turtle doesn't have a shell, is it homeless or naked?
• Can vegetarians eat animal crackers?
• If police arrest a mute, do they tell him he has the right to remain silent?
• Why do they put braile on drive through bank machines?
• What was the best thing before sliced bread?
• If one synchronized swimmer drowns, do the rest drown too?
• If you ate pasta and antipasta, would you still be hungry?
• If you try to fail and succeed, which have you done?
• Why is there an expiration date on sour cream?
• Can an atheist get insurance against acts of God?

and Clouds

• Rhonda Andrews – for a quick recovery from her shoulder surgery and prayers for he Dad who has contracted COVID in his assisted living facility
• Our thoughts are with David Kutz’s mother whose white blood count has sky rocketed.
• Stop by to say hello to Rick Graham…and remember…he does like cookies.
• Rachel Cable’s daughter and son-in-law who now have COVID.

The Cruise to Port Townsend
June 26th—28th

Port Townsend Cruise 2020

We had a great turn out for Port Townsend with 17 boats and 7 RVs!  Everyone was chomping at the bit for the chance to get out in the fresh air and did their best to have fun, safely.  John and Shelley put together a very clever Scavenger Hunt that got people out and around town.  It was a hotly contested finish…with some folks preparing their protests before we finished (you know who you are).   The group played a rousing round of Name That Tune…with Tony Clark hitting EVERY SINGLE ONE…what!!!  LOL  Burt Ellison was the big winner at the ever popular Giant Jenga as Walter watched it all come tumbling down.

The trip was peppered with thoughtful touches to ensure a good time was had by all…morning pastries and coffee at the RV site, a roaring fire (well sort of) for cocktail hour on Saturday, individually wrapped snacks and cookies prepared by Janice Kutz and Sandi Dalgleish.  We also raffled off a beautiful flower planter and some Shared Dream Cellars wine free just for attending

A huge thank you to Shelley & John Gantz and Janice Kutz for all the effort they put into the planning, preparations and delivery with thoughtful touches to make it special.  And to Walter and Karen for the roaring fire to keep us warm.

Langley Cruise 2020

After surviving a cool Friday afternoon we woke up to a beautiful sunny Saturday morning. Crabbing began on Friday and continued on Saturday. Dinghies were deployed and a few pots were dropped off the dock.

We enjoyed a crab throw down feed for dinner on Saturday. Enough crab for everyone to enjoy with some left over! Steve Young was anointed as the crab slayer for the weekend. Thanks to Alan Kester, Steve Young and Rick Woods for cleaning and cooking the crab.

We had a good turn out with 8 boats coming over for the fun – Knotty Shell, Kathi O, Sunny Daze, Toy Maker, Carrie Louis, Forever Young, Seafood, and No Bad Days and High Life who joined on Saturday. Joseph and Ilse also joined the fun, staying in a hotel near the marina.
Great fun.

A BIG THANK YOU to our Cruise Captains Shelly and Alan Kester!
