Forming the KCYC Nominating Committee

The opportunity to serve KCYC in a leadership role is a distinct honor. In this capacity, your efforts are the key to a well-run organization, engaging the membership, and providing value for all to enjoy.

Ensuring the right team for this job requires careful construction. The team needs members with a firm understanding of how the club will need to operate and it requires a diversity of perspectives to ensure the entire club is represented.

To this end, I have asked the following members to be a part of the 2020 Nominating Committee:

•  Our immediate Past Commodore, Nancy Langwith, will chair this year’s Nominating Committee. Nancy’s leadership is well revered by the club.

•  Also Past Commodore, Steve Young, has served the club in a number of positions over the past seven years. His experience and perspective will bolster depth and character to the team.

• This will be the second year that Kim Page serves on the Nominating Committee. Kim’s many contributions to our “Friday Night” success and the club’s social leadership is appreciated by all.

•  John Gantz has fulfilled our Quartermaster role and supported his wife Shelley to chair the social events calendar. John adds the perspective of a non-boater to this team.

•  I have asked a new member, Rick Wood, to contribute a fresh perspective to the team. Having joined the club recently with his wife, Kimberly, they have been active and contributing new members even in this restricted environment.

Join me in congratulating the 2020 KCYC Nominating Committee. Make sure you provide a big Thank You to each member next time you see them.

Ken Dalgleish, Commodore

KCYC Nominating Committee – Call for Nominations

Are you interested in a Board Leadership Position?  The Commodore has selected the 2020 Nominating Committee members.  The responsibilities of this group are to advertise open positions on the Board, collect names or offer names of potential candidates, inform potential candidates of the role and expectations for each position, receive a commitment from each candidate, identify at least one candidate for each open position and present those names to the general membership for a final vote at the September General meeting.

As has been true in the past, the open positions include: Commodore, Vice Commodore, Rear Commodore, Fleet Captain, Treasurer, Secretary, and Trustee (2 year Term). The current 2 year Trustee, Rick Eveleth, will continue in his position and the current Commodore will become the Past Commodore. There is a tradition of flag officers “walking the chairs” meaning that flag officers move through the chairs from Fleet Captain to Commodore in order to maintain continuity and institutional knowledge. Although the tradition stands, it is not absolute and anyone interested must notify the Nominating Committee if they would like to be considered for any office.

Leadership is paramount to the success of the club and each member has the responsibility to help select that leadership and volunteer for a leadership position when ready. With this Call for Nominations, we are asking that each person consider whether this is the year that they will step for a Board Position or provide names of others that they think would be a good fit. Job descriptions and the Bylaws Requirements for officers may be found on the website in the Documents Folder. Please pass your own name or another to a member of the Nominating Committee for consideration. The Nominating Committee will contact each nominated person to offer information concerning the role and the expectations via discussions and job descriptions. If you have questions or would like more information, contact any member of the Nominating Committee.

Remember it is OK to nominate yourself!

Nancy Langwith
Chair, Nominating Committee

A Report on the Commemorative Walkway

Congratulations and Thank You to Jerry Kirschner who organized, advertised, sold the bricks and constructed the KCYC Commemorative Walkway.  Special Thanks to the members who worked with Jerry to build the walkway:  Jack Lott, Greg Colt, Ken Dalgleish, Jozef Rura, Lynn Colton, and Bob Britton.

The walkway is opened but a formal opening celebration is being planned for a later date.  Jerry reported that the work on the walkway was personally very satisfying. He sold 138 bricks to members, former members, and Kingston residents and businesses.  The 50th Anniversary Commemorative Walk revenue was $11,310.00. After all expenses were paid there was a contribution of $6,700.00 to the Long Range Contingency Fund for the Clubhouse.

If you would still like to purchase a brick to add to the walkway, contact Jerry Kirschner at kirschnerj43@gmail.com. If there is interest bricks may be added. The cost of the brick is $100.00

Helen Meredith Award Recipient

The Kingston Cove Yacht Club Helen Meredith Community Service Award is given to a community member who has made a significant difference to Kingston by leadership, active participation in and distinguished service to the community.

The recipient of the 2020 Kingston Cove Yacht Club Helen Meredith Community Service Award is Kim Francisco-Clark. Kim owns and operates a successful restaurant and catering service, The Ale House. She volunteers for the Kathleen Sutton Fund and the Kingston Cove Yacht Club and is a member of the Kingston Events Committee. The success of the business stems from her caring and supportive attitude to her employees, customers, and community members.

Clubhouse Re-opens
Friday Night Social Hour In-Person AND on ZOOM Every Friday @ 6pm

The club’s virtual cocktail hour will be available at least through the end of July, for members who aren’t comfortable coming to the club. Unfortunately, the noise level and internet connection at the club make interacting with those at the clubhouse impossible, but at least the view will be available. For a better, full-3D experience with surround sound, join us at the clubhouse by making a reservation, masking up, and making the quick trip down to the beautiful Kingston waterfront to say hello in person!

Friday Virtual Social Hour - 6/26/2020

Port Townsend Cruise
June 26th—28th

We have 18 boats and 7 RVs signed up, but you can still drive up and join in the activities. If you decide to join in, please let Shelley Gantz know you're coming.

Cruises looking ahead—
Upcoming cruise reminders

  • Port of South Whidbey (Langley) July 24th – 26th:  We have a group reservation. If you are interested, please register on the KCYC.org website via the calendar entry asap. The marina is small and it will be first come, first serve. There are RV options at the Langley Fairgrounds. The RV sites there are first come, first serve, but the Fairgrounds manager felt there wouldn't be a problem handling 6 RVs or so. Call them directly or send questions to John Gantz.
Port of South Whidbey (Langley) - 7/24/2020

  • Friday Harbor Sept 1st – 3rd:  Whether coming by boat or by ferry/car, you would have seen emails in the early spring to make your reservations early. You can always cancel, but if you wait you may not find a slip or lodging.
Labor Day Friday Harbor Cruise - 9/4/2020

Thank You To Our Recent Volunteers

A special shout out to those who have been coming out and helping with the variety of tasks as we prepared to reopen.
•  Drew Lagravenese – excellent job of power washing the patio furniture
•  Bob Brittin and Lyn Colton – the newly painted railing definitely sets off the new commemorative walkway
•  Julie and Dave Turner – manned the Friday night “safe seating” last week. We will need more folks moving forward!
•  Summer Solstice – Greg Wright, Robin Lott, Bob •  Brittin and Lyn Colton, John and Shelley Gantz for setting up, manning the front door, sanitizing the tables for turnover, and clean up.

It takes a village…. as you can see there are a variety of ways to get your volunteer hours in. Now is the time.

Helping Feed Kingston Families

Thanks to the fourteen people that volunteered to help feed Kingston Families. Many in our community were struggling to make ends meet and put food on the table. In partnership with the Kingston Ale House, KCYC dispensed bags of perishable and non-perishable food to Kingston families in need. This was an extension of the food program conducted by the Ale House since the beginning of the pandemic. The program was providing between 80-100 bags of food for the community. As we entered the project, the need was decreasing but we saw it to its natural end as community families were able to provide for themselves once again. Although some volunteers didn’t see “action”, we thank them for stepping up to serve their community.

Thanks go to Rachel Henderson, Beth Nelson, Pete and Karen Waite, Quentin Gilman, Julie Westwater, Stan and Jane Mack, Carol Wetmore, Shelley Gantz, Diane Nuñnz, Corina Lagravinese, Kathy Showman, and John Hatcher.

Nancy Langwith,
Community Engagement

Consider Joining RBAW

RBAW, Recreational Boating Association of Washington, is an organization that KCYC fully supports. This advocacy group represents the interests of boater and non-boater alike, lobbying for fairness in regulations, licensing and privacy issues, and recently removing restrictions imposed on boaters as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

KCYC pays a separate membership fee to this organization and encourages all of our members to consider joining. The annual dues are $20.00 per individual (household). If you indicate your interest, we will follow up with a separate invoice to you payable to KCYC, which we will in turn, total up with all dues collected and submit to RBAW on your behalf. Your name will be linked to KCYC as a subscribing member of RBAW, showing your personal support for this important organization.

By email to Treasurer@KCYC.org, please indicate your interest in joining. We will then follow up with an invoice sent directly to you for payment. The deadline for indicating your interest is July 4th, an easy date to remember.

To learn more about RBAW, please visit their website at www.RBAW.org.

Past Events

Bell Harbor Cruise

We had 9 boats come over to Bell Harbor to enjoy and celebrate Memorial Day weekend. A huge shout out and thanks to Cheryl and Art who planned a fun itinerary under our unusual (COVID restricted) environment. I am not sure I have seen people have so much fun playing Bingo before! We had plenty of time for some great dinghy excursions, and the “Corona” drink contest was definitely interesting to say the least. It was sure great to get out on the water again. Our thanks to the weather gods who brought the rain over night and broke out the sun just in time for a very special Memorial Day service with patriotic music and the floating of a beautiful wreath (handmade by Cheryl). We were very blessed and honored to have 4 veterans come into Port Saturday evening, notice our Missing Man Table and stay over on Sunday to participate in the service, actually going out with Art to float the wreath. Very, very touching for us and for them.

Summer Solstice Party

Well, the weather held out for us…rain moved out and sun came out. It was a lovely time on the patio and the bar was open. The Ranger Tug group who down on the guest dock by invitation from the Port just LOVED Kingston and want to make plans to come back in larger numbers in September. A good time was had by all.
