Beautiful Friday Harbor
Gateway to the San Juan Islands
MAKE YOU RESERVATIONS NOW...THIS WILL BOOK UP EARLY*

Come away for a beautiful weekend at beautiful Friday Harbor, the gateway to the San Juan Islands.  You will be enchanted by this charming, historic, walk-able seaport just steps from the ferry landing with a multitude of small, friendly shops and restaurants.  In this visitor, family, and dog-friendly town, you’ll find a plethora of activities to keep you busy, from whale watching excursions, kayaking tours, The Whale Museum...and that is just in town.

There's no need for a car to see Friday Harbor. Everything is within walking distance of the ferry landing, and it is easy to get around, including shuttle buses and a trolley to take you around the island, as well as bike, three-wheeled Scootcoupes, and moped rentals.

Friday Harbor lodging accommodations offer a wide range of options including B&B, hotels and inns that let you open your doors to all that the town has to offer. You can get away from it all and still be just steps from charming cafes, galleries and shops, musical performances and plays, the Saturday farmers' market, and more.

New Member Applicants for February

Brian and Debby Tyler discovered Kingston Cove Yacht Club through an internet search. Four and a half years ago Brian was hired as a trainer to work at the shipyard and while house hunting they discovered Kingston. The Tyler’s enjoy boating, socializing, fishing, rooting for Seahawks and playing with their dogs. They are looking forward to becoming members to meet new friends and contribute to the community. The Tyler’s have attended several KCYC functions.

Commodore's Corner—Ken Dalgleish

This will be the last Commodores Corner that I write. I will be switching to the Commodore's blog! Instead of me writing about important and exciting things, I would like to better understand what you are thinking and provide an alternative option for you to provide your input. Look for the Commodores blog on KCYC.org.

It has been a busy month for the KCYC family. Our 2020 kick off cruise to Edmonds, The Polar Bear Cruise, was a huge success! This is an important event for the fleet as the proceeds from the meal are a major fund raiser for all of the 2020 cruse activities. Raffle funds at this event make a substantial contribution to the general fund as well. Thanks again to Jim Simpson, Todd Lachelt and Jovita Lachelt for a fabulous prime rib feast.

A special note to all of the volunteers that made such a wonderful team with the Port of Kingston and the Ale House. Together, a new high bar was set for The Community Meal at the Village Green. The food, service, and organization helped to serve a record number of people.

Members, thank you for your involvement with our new website! We have around 60 members that are regulars on the site. If anyone needs help on the site, please feel free to reach out for assistance. We are constantly working to improve the content and communications to keep the site current and relevant. Watch for upcoming changes that will provide a greater two-way interaction with the activities of the club.

At the January General Meeting the membership approved the KCYC budget and the 3 year strategic plan. We have targeted membership growth to achieve 175 members, fully funded our contingency funds, and established a solid foundation for the coming year’s activities.

Through the volunteering of members to our various committees, the work of the club gets organized and completed. Several of the committees are well underway. To highlight just a few:
• Our Membership Committee, led by Steve Young, has launched activities and more to come. Be sure to bring your badge anytime you are at the club. If you forget, a on the spot sticker with your name will be provided. We want everyone to know your name!
• Our Social Committee, led by Shelley and John Gantz, have established an initial calendar of events for the year and are making great strides in establishing an organized approach to many fun events.
• Our 2020 Facilities Committee, led by Art Hammon, has held their initial meeting. This team will be developing a design document to socialize with all members. This will become the focus for any and all improvement we make to our current facility.  As always, please reach out at any time to provide a helping hand. The volunteering is always greatly appreciated.

Our guest speaker for the February meeting will be David Fyfe, David will be providing an update on crabbing in the local area. Don’t miss this opportunity to meet and interact with David.

Update on Membership Renewals—Jack Lott

Every year at dues renewal time, we lose a few members. People move on and life interests change, On average around 15 people leave, meaning we need to find 15 new people just to keep our membership level. I am happy to report that this year, we believe we will lose fewer members than in the past. As of today, we’ve only had 4 people confirm directly that they wish not to renew. There are another 13 that are still outstanding, but we expect many of those long time members to renew, so we are optimistic that our membership is growing.

Our membership committee is hard at work contacting the last remaining members asking them to renew. If you know someone who is on the fence, please encourage them to stay members. We have a lot of exciting changes coming and look forward to a growing and prosperous club in the future.

The Bar Report—Jerry Andrews

Would it surprise you to know that the club bar carries 17 different beers, including 3 choices containing no alcohol? Or 20 different wines? Did you know we have sweet and unsweet tea, hot cider and chocolate, and coffee and mocha Frappuccino?

The club bar carries 5 scotches (2 more on the way!), 9 bourbons, 4 Canadian whiskies, and 2 Irish whiskies. We also carry 6 choices of gin, 4 rums, 5 tequilas, and a decent brandy.

The next time you’re in the mood for something a little different, try a little peppermint schnapps in a cup of hot chocolate, or a “Raging Bull”: vodka and Patron Café liquor, or a “Dark and Stormy”: ginger beer with a dark rum float and a squeeze of lime. And do check out the wine and beer list, updated every week with our latest finds from the vast selection of locally-available wine and beer!

See you at the club— open every Friday at 6:00pm.

Volunteer to Join the Social Committee

The social committee is off to a good start for 2020, starting with a brainstorming session in January. The calendar of events, while a work in progress, is coming along, with both repeat events -- like Saint Patrick’s Day, the wine walk, and a pig roast -- and new events, like a summer beach party and fall homecoming dance.
Meanwhile, we encourage members submit ideas and suggestions, not to mention volunteer or even join the committee. July 4th is closer than you think.

Thanks in advance.

On the Passing of Steve Hyman

Regrettably we announce that we have lost our 2009 -2010 Past Commodore, Steve Hyman.

Steve passed Saturday, February 8th in an automobile accident in Texas where he and his wife Lynn were visiting their grandchildren. Both grandchildren were in the car with Steve at the time of the accident and sustained non-life threatening injuries.

Steve is survived by his wife, Lynn, his sons, Joel and Steve, and his two grandchildren.

Steve will be remembered for his countless contributions to the country and community. He is retired Navy, a volunteer to the Power Squadron, an educator for numerous boating and sailing classes, and was the Captain for the first round Kingston Fast Ferry.

At the club we will remember Steve for his leadership as Commodore in 2009-2010, his innovation in starting the Brownville Cruise and Spaghetti Dinner and his service in volunteering so much to the club.

Steve and Lynn are active Christians and members at the Kingston Christian Church.  Our thoughts and prayers are with Lynn and the family during this difficult time. We will advise once service details become available.

Upcoming Friday Activities
February 28th is game night with Costco tastings. Games of all kinds will be on tables so members can gather groups to play whatever strikes their fancy. Food will have a Costco theme….everything there will be from Costco…just a step up from the little tasting stations in the store! Come check it out.

KCYC is hosting Hidden Harbor Yacht Club on March 27th by hosting a MEAT LOAF CONTEST.   KCYC and HHYC members will enter their favorites so the GAME IS ON! Sign up to bring your favorite meatloaf. The club will provide baked potatoes and salad. Contestants will not need to pay for dinner. Looking for someone to run the meat loaf competition. Please contact Kimpage827@gmail.com. Sign up sheet for meatloaf will be at the February meeting or you can email Kim.

You may have noticed that the Second Annual Whiskey tasting has been postponed due to a conflict in schedule. The Kingston Chamber will be honoring our own Gloria Young and Cheryl Graham for their yearly hard work on the Kingston Cove Christmas on that date. Plan to attend if you can, the Whiskey Tasting WILL be rescheduled!!!

First Friday BINGO will return March 6th! It would be great if someone provided a simple food item…pot of Chile, soup, pizza? If so please let Jerry Andrews or Denise know.

Polar Bear Cruise & Dinner —
What an Amazing Event!

What a fabulous way to kick off the 2020 Cruising season. The weather was good for the cruise over and back, and the rain held off for everyone coming over on Saturday by ferry and car.

We had just under 70 people show up for a delicious prime rib dinner served up by Jim Simpson and Todd and Jovita Lechelt. They made serving a large crowd look effortless. Jerry Andrews and Steve Page did an excellent job with setting up a beautiful bar and keeping our glasses filled. Carol Wetmore once again ran a very fun and successful raffle with the help of our members who contributed some unique and fun items. Rachel Henderson headed up the ever popular 50/50 raffle with pizzazz. A big thank you to all the others who helped make this a big success….couldn’t do it without the help of our volunteers:
• Gloria Young & Kim Page MacEllven for manning the door.
• Linda and Eric MacEllven, Cheryl Jester, Chris Heide – for pitching in and helping with the clean up after.

The weather couldn’t have been better...a good sign for a great season ahead. A great time was had by all!

Red Carpet Oscar Cocktail Party—
And the Oscar Goes to........

The Red Carpet Oscar Party was a first for KCYC. 31 people enjoyed watching the Academy Awards on two screens while sipping champagne and eating appetizers. Award speeches BINGO was an added attraction. All the way around, a successful event. The winner for the best costume went to Jerry Kirschner, who came as a "key grip".  And the winner for choosing the most correct award recipients was.........(drumroll) Gloria Young.

Many thanks to Gloria and Kim for all their hard work putting this event together, including preparing all the appetizers.  Thank you to Jamie Hunter for being the official event photographer; Rita Osborne for making delicious cookies; Jack and Robin Lott for manning the door; Sandi Dalgleish for bringing an appetizer; and Steve Page and Robin Lott for doing all the dishes.!
